Yoshitaka MIYAMOTO

Yoshitaka Miyamoto is a Japanese social entrepreneur who believes that shared meals have the power to transform human relationships and strengthen communities. After a career in marketing and communications, he founded TanoBa in Tokyo, a community space inspired by the French model of Les Petites Cantines, where residents, neighbors, and visitors cook and share meals together.

Through TanoBa Shokudo, he promotes a simple yet powerful vision: creating social connections through cooking and shared meals, combating isolation, and encouraging encounters between generations, cultures, and life experiences. There is no celebrity chef here; everyone is invited to take part, prepare food, share a recipe, or simply join the table.

For Yoshitaka Miyamoto, food is above all a universal language capable of bringing people together and rebuilding a sense of community in increasingly individualistic societies. His commitment has made TanoBa a leading example of social innovation through food in Japan, where every meal becomes an opportunity for connection, mutual support, and conviviality.

TanoBa Meal

TanoBa is a Japanese social enterprise founded in 2023 by three former Yahoo! Japan employees with an ambitious mission: to eliminate loneliness from the world. Believing that meaningful human connection is a fundamental need, the founders create spaces and experiences that encourage authentic encounters between people who might otherwise never have met.

At the heart of this initiative is TanoBa Shokudō (“TanoBa Community Dining”), an innovative communal dining concept where people of all ages and backgrounds gather around a shared table. Neither a traditional restaurant nor a private event, TanoBa Shokudō is built on the principles of sharing, conversation, and conviviality. Meals are prepared by volunteer cooks, there is no fixed menu, and participants contribute on a voluntary basis according to their means and appreciation of the experience.

Inspired in part by French community dining initiatives and social gastronomy projects, (Les Petites Cantines) TanoBa seeks to address what it describes as “unwanted loneliness,” a growing social challenge in Japan. By bringing together different generations, professions, and perspectives through food, the organization creates an environment where dialogue, empathy, and mutual understanding become just as important as the meal itself.

Beyond its community dining activities, TanoBa also supports organizations in the fields of communication, team building, and collective intelligence, always guided by the belief that strong human relationships are essential to both individual well-being and organizational success.

Through its various initiatives, TanoBa embodies a contemporary vision of gastronomy as a catalyst for social connection, demonstrating how sharing a meal can strengthen communities, foster inclusion, and help combat isolation.
