Passionate about gastronomy since childhood, Thomas Boutin honed his skills alongside chefs such as Jean-François Rouquette, Bruno Doucet, Patrick Pignol and Jean-Pierre Bruneau, before fulfilling a childhood dream: opening his own restaurant, Le Vieux Crapaud. He had imagined this restaurant at just four years old, after discovering the unique taste of frogs’ legs during a meal with his grandmother! For many years, he championed a cuisine rooted in French culinary heritage, celebrating local producers and reviving traditional recipes..
But behind this successful career lies a more painful story. Over the years, Thomas gradually fell into addiction to alcohol, drugs and work, a downward spiral that profoundly affected both his personal and professional life.
After closing his restaurant, he spent several months at La Maison de Kate. This experience transformed his life, helping him break free from his addictions. Drawing on his own journey, he decided to break the silence surrounding a condition that is still too often downplayed or hidden in the restaurant industry, where he continues to work as a chef today.
Now actively supporting the organisation Addict’Aide, Thomas is determined to share his story, raise awareness and help change attitudes within a profession particularly exposed to these risks.
His message is that of a man who has overcome a difficult ordeal and rediscovered the joy of living:
“Today, I’ve been completely free from all my addictions for a year, and I feel alive again. I can breathe. I am free.”
