Mariya UN NOUN

Mariya Un Noun is a committed Cambodian chef, renowned for her dedication to Khmer cuisine and for a journey closely intertwined with Smiling Gecko, the organization founded by Swiss photographer and humanitarian Hannes Schmid. Dedicated to education, vocational training, and employment opportunities for disadvantaged communities in Cambodia, Smiling Gecko profoundly changed the course of Mariya’s life.

Coming from a modest background, she was given the opportunity to develop her culinary talent through the support of the organization, including professional training in Switzerland. This experience eventually led her to become Executive Chef of Restaurant UN, located within the Farmhouse Resort & Spa, an establishment that is part of the Smiling Gecko ecosystem.

Through her cuisine, Mariya Un Noun showcases local ingredients and Cambodian culinary traditions while contributing to the emergence of a contemporary gastronomy that remains proud of its roots. Yet her commitment extends far beyond the plate. By sharing her experience and expertise, she now mentors and inspires young Cambodians from disadvantaged backgrounds, actively contributing to their training and professional integration.

Her story illustrates the transformative power of education and mentorship. Mariya Un Noun embodies a generation of chefs for whom gastronomy is not only an art, but also a tool for empowerment, dignity, and social change.

SMILING GECKO

Smiling Gecko is a non-governmental organization founded in 2012 by Swiss photographer and humanitarian Hannes Schmid with the ambition of creating a long-term response to poverty in Cambodia. More than a humanitarian project, Smiling Gecko has developed a comprehensive ecosystem designed to provide vulnerable communities with the tools and opportunities to build sustainable futures.

Based in the province of Kampong Chhnang, the organization operates across several interconnected sectors, including education, healthcare, agriculture, vocational training, hospitality, and employment. Its approach is guided by a strong belief: humanitarian aid can only be truly sustainable when it promotes economic independence and the transfer of skills.

At the heart of this model are a farm, a school, training facilities, and the Farmhouse Resort & Spa, whose Restaurant UN serves as one of the project’s culinary showcases. Together, these initiatives enable young Cambodians from disadvantaged backgrounds to acquire professional skills and gain access to meaningful employment opportunities.

Through this integrated approach, Smiling Gecko demonstrates how gastronomy, agriculture, and hospitality can become powerful drivers of human development and social transformation. Today, the organization is widely regarded as one of the most innovative development projects in Cambodia, combining excellence, sustainability, and social impact.
