Upcycling is the process of transforming raw materials and used products into new, more valuable items. This means using recycled materials to create products with a higher value than virgin materials. The process does not alter the original materials. In the recycling process, on the other hand, waste is treated and transformed into another material. For example, glass bottles can be used to make new glass bottles.
Upcycling remains an artisanal practice, particularly used by designers in the fields of art, fashion and design. A survey conducted by Etsy revealed that the number of items described as “upcycled” has exploded since 2011 and continues to rise.
