They are often served as an accompaniment to tacos, burritos, enchiladas or simply with tortillas. The beans, usually black or pinto, are cooked, mashed and re-cooked with fat, such as oil, lard or butter.  <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #aec145;\"><strong>Ingredients<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>500 g dried kidney or black beans (or canned, to save time)<\/li>\n<li>2 CS vegetable oil or lard<\/li>\n<li>1 medium onion, finely chopped<\/li>\n<li>2 garlic cloves, crushed<\/li>\n<li>Salt and pepper to taste<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1fc5b99 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"1fc5b99\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2699e15 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2699e15\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"color: #aec145;\">Cook the beans<\/span> <br \/>Soak dried beans overnight in water. Drain, then cook in unsalted water for about 1-2 hours, until tender. Otherwise, simply drain canned beans.  <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #aec145;\">Saut\u00e9 onion and garlic<\/span> <br \/>Heat oil or lard in a frying pan. Add onion and saut\u00e9 until translucent. Add the garlic and continue cooking for a few moments.  <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #aec145;\">Mash the beans<\/span> <br \/>Add the cooked beans to the pan. Mash with a fork or potato masher. Cook over low heat, stirring regularly to prevent sticking.  <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #aec145;\">Season to<\/span> taste <br \/>Add salt and pepper to taste. Continue cooking until thick and creamy. <\/p>\n<p>Serve frijoles refritos hot, garnished with fromage frais, coriander or a touch of chilli for extra flavour.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #aec145;\">Advice<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Add a little chicken stock or spices like cumin during cooking for extra flavor.
